Arguably, the simplest song on the record, my motivation for writing it was, you guessed it, a love gone astray. Instead of beating myself up and feeling bad, I thought about all the people throughout history that had had love affairs flower and then naturally fade away. All of those love affairs, all those people living under the same stars as you and I. I came to realize that things have a way of working themselves out naturally.
lyrics
Didn't we try
Didn’t we give it half a chance
You and I
Living to learn and love romance
Walking you home
Under the stary stary night
Never alone
And knowing that it would be alright
Just hold me tight
Didn't we try
Didn't we laugh out loud at that
You and I
Looking at all the photographs
We were feeling at home
Just walking the world hand in hand
We would talk on the phone
Just living the memories that we planned
Oh how we’d plan
And on and on it goes
The story has been told
The constellation formulation
Tragedy of old unfolds
Didn’t we try
Didn’t we give it all we had
You and I
How can it be that we’re are sad
Walking alone
Under the stary stary night
Calling you up
Even though I know your not home
Now we’re not home
And don’t you ask me why
Cause it’s written in the sky
Well the constellation formulation
It’s telling us to say
Goodbye
Didn't we try
Didn’t we laugh out loud at that
It’s making me cry
Looking at all the photographs
